The Full Story Behind Sky Park's Shattered Glass Panel At One City Mall
The incident happened on Sunday, 5 April.
A Facebook post regarding an incident at One City Mall in USJ is being wildly shared. According to the post, which was originally made on 5 April, one of the glass panels at the Sky Park broke.
The Facebook post has very limited details regarding the incident.
One of the images show a total of five people bent over the glass floor, attempting to repair a glass panel.
It also shows a man, presumably a security guard, pointing towards the person clicking the photos of the work in progress.
We reached out to One City Mall for more details on the incident, and spoke to their Corporate Communications Department. According to their statement, the incident happened on Sunday.
"The top layer of one the glass panel was shattered and spotted by our security personnel who was doing his daily routine check," One City's Corporate Communications Department told SAYS.
"However, the shattered glass panel remained intact and in place due to its tempered nature. In addition, the bottom layer which remained in one piece held the shattered top layer," the statement further read.
The glass panel was replaced within two hours and there was no report of any injury to any patron
"There was no leakage into the building from the shattered panel nor were there any broken glass that fell from the rooftop." Speaking about the cause of the incident, they told SAYS that it was due to a point of impact on the glass surface.
Immediately after the incident, the security personnel cordoned off the entire section of the glass panel. "The shattered glass panel was replaced immediately by the qualified maintenance team within two hours, right after the rain subsided," they said.
Talking to SAYS, they assured that "the rooftop glass panels are made up of double layer heavy duty tempered glass" and that daily routine checks are made
Responding to our queries regarding the preventive measure taken by the mall, their Corporate Communications Department told us that "the building management team does a daily routine check on each and every glass panel to ensure its condition and safety."
"We have full-time security personnel to monitor the safety of visitors at the rooftop, including the monitoring of the glass panels. It is a standard procedure to have the daily routine check on the glass panels. In the case of any unexpected event, the security personnel is instructed to isolate the entire section of the glass panel from the public."

What is Sky Park? It is One City Mall's rooftop area made entirely from glass panels. It officially opened in December 2013.
It is the first commercial mall in Malaysia with such a feature but what is perplexing is that such commercial properties with “sky glass bridges” that give you the feeling of a “sky walk” was already introduced in Bangkok more than a decade ago. Sky Park also features a cinema and a 243-room 4-star hotel called eCity Hotel.
Sky Park also features an elegant all-glass facade, giving it a unique marriage of modern architecture with the dainty touch of Mother Nature, starting with the 12-feet atrium that is beautifully lit by natural light to each and every floor of the mall.
