Malaysia's locally developed navigation app, TuJu, has experienced a temporary service disruption to its core routing features, just one day after federal authorities encouraged citizens to switch from the Israeli-founded Waze platform to local alternatives
The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) Traffic Management Centre announced the system outage in a notice posted on its official Facebook account.
According to the notice, the platform is undergoing planned technical upgrades to enhance long-term user performance.
While the primary navigation and route-planning features remain offline, other services within the app, including real-time closed-circuit television (CCTV) highway feeds, toll rate calculators, rest area locators, and emergency assistance functions, continue to operate as usual.
Officials have not provided a definitive timeline for the restoration of full navigation capabilities.
The service disruption comes amid a government push to phase out Waze across the public sector
The cabinet banned civil servants from using Waze while carrying out official duties over data privacy concerns and the app's regulatory ties to Israeli jurisdiction.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chaired the National Cyber Security Committee meeting on 20 October, during which officials identified potential national security risks related to the tracking of users' movements.
Following the meeting, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar instructed all ministry secretaries-general and department heads to enforce the ban immediately.
While the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) clarified that the prohibition applies specifically to civil servants performing official duties, the Prime Minister's Department urged the general public to switch to homegrown applications like TuJu voluntarily.
Jointly developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority and Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd, TuJu offers live traffic monitoring, route guidance, and direct integration with expressways nationwide.
