Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali have made history as Asia's first living centenarian couple, receiving three record recognitions for their remarkable milestones
According to Bernama, 101-year-old Dr Mahathir has been recognised by ASEAN Records as the Oldest Living Former Prime Minister, while 100-year-old Dr Siti Hasmah has been recognised as the Oldest Living Spouse of a Former Prime Minister.
The couple also jointly received an ASIA Records recognition as the First Former Head of Government and Spouse to Both Become Living Centenarians.
The recognitions were presented to the couple at a ceremony at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya on Tuesday, 11 August, capping a month of significant milestones for the pair
According to Dr Mahathir's official Facebook page, he celebrated his 101st birthday on 10 July, followed by Dr Siti Hasmah's 100th birthday on 12 July.
The couple also celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on 5 August.
Their love story began in 1947, when they were both medical students at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore.
They married in 1956 and went on to raise seven children together, while embarking on a decades-long journey that eventually saw them serve the country at its highest levels.
ASEAN Records said its adjudication team had verified that no equivalent achievements had been publicly documented across the ASEAN region and major Asian markets
The certificates were presented by ASEAN Records Advisory Board chairman Tan Sri Datuk Danny Ooi, alongside chief adjudicators Gillian Ooi and Eldrick Koh, who are also directors of ASEAN Records and ASIA Records.
