It was an anti-riot drill ahead of GE14.
As the 14th general election nears, law enforcement units across the country began conducting anti-riot drills to be fully prepared for election day
According to China Press, the Light Strike Force (LSF), Federal Reserve Unit (FRU), General Operations Force (PGA), and the Mounted Police Unit all conducted their own anti-riot drills yesterday, 4 March.
In Penang, 300 police took part in an anti-riot drill yesterday, which involved "supporters" from the "opposing camp" protesting against election results
During the drill at Dewan Sri Pinang, "results" of GE14 have just been announced and a party has won Penang by a slight majority.
According to Free Malaysia Today, this "upset" the opposing camp, which led to a clash between "supporters" and the riot police.
"Protesters" kept hurling water bottles and taunting the riot police, saying "tembak kami lah" (shoot us)
Free Malaysia Today reported that the riot police held up a banner which reads: "Disperse immediately or else we will disperse you with force."
Later on, tear gas was fired into the crowd after "protesters" ignored the calls to disperse.
China Press also reported that "supporters" from both "parties" eventually joined forces to taunt and challenge the riot police for purposes of the drill.
Penang police chief Commissioner A. Thaiveegan said at least 300 policemen were deployed in the exercise to ensure they would be fully prepared for election day
Thaiveegan was satisfied with the anti-riot drill, and hopes that there will not be actual riots happening on election day itself.
According to him, there will be 5,500 policemen put on standby throughout the campaign period and on polling day.
