A minute-and-half long video on Facebook shows a man in Malaysia using red spray paint on a caged macaque as it wails in distress

The video, which has been uploaded on the social media platform by an animal rights non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Malaysia Animal Crime Transparency (MyAct), was posted on 23 September.

In the post, MyAct has urged people to help identify the man who sprayed the monkey with the aerosol paint and others who were involved in making the video of the animal being abused.

Under Section 86 of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, which covers cruelty to wildlife, anyone found guilty could be fined between RM5,000 and RM50,000 or be jailed for a year or to both.

It's not yet clear where exactly the incident happened, but the video offers some identifying clues on the location and the people involved

For example, a car seen parked close to the man in the video is bearing what appears to be the Royal Malaysian Customs crest with a Johor-registered licence plate.

While still not being concrete enough, it does confirm the incident likely happened in the southern state.

An anonymous spokesperson from MyAct, who was speaking to Astro Awani, said this was not the first time such an incident has happened

"Spray painting monkeys, long-tailed macaques, and pig-tailed macaques who were caught by locals for causing disturbances is a crime and it's not the first time this has happened," the person said, adding that there have been "four cases so far this year, and the latest appears to have taken place in Johor".

This video shows a horrible and unethical act (towards animals).
