Thick black smoke could be seen billowing high into the sky after a fire broke out at a waste management facility in the Gebeng industrial area early Friday morning, 12 June, drawing widespread attention from motorists and nearby residents
The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call about the incident at around 6am, prompting firefighters from the Gebeng and Kuantan fire stations to rush to the scene, reported the New Straits Times.
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Mohd Salahuddin Isa confirmed the incident, saying firefighting operations were still underway to bring the blaze under control.
"No casualties have been reported," he said.
Images and videos of the fire quickly spread across social media
Several showed a massive column of dark smoke rising above the industrial zone and visible from a considerable distance.
The incident also sparked concern among locals and workers in the area, with social media users sharing their reactions as footage of the blaze circulated online.
One Threads user said she was worried after learning that the facility affected by the fire was her husband's workplace.
"Please pray that my husband and his colleagues are safe and that everything goes smoothly. It makes me sad because this is where my husband earns a living," she wrote.

Others said they noticed the smoke shortly after dawn, even before details of the fire became widely known.
Another asked online whether a factory had caught fire behind the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) in Gebeng after spotting the thick smoke from afar.
"My father said the smoke was already rising around 6am when he was on his way to the mosque. Not sure which factory it was, near the traffic lights by ILP," one user commented.

As of publication, firefighters were continuing efforts to contain the blaze, and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
