A video of a street fight between foreigners and locals in Keningau town in Kota Kinabalu that happened on 1 June 2014 has gone viral

KOTA KINABALU: A video of a street fight allegedly between locals and foreigners in Sabah’s interior Keningau town is causing a stir.

The 23-second video, believed to have been filmed close to the town’s fish market on Sunday, shows a group of men being chased by a person armed with a fish skimmer.

The video also depicts another man laying face down on the ground and being kicked by another individual in the face. The injured man is then seen lifting his head up for a moment before falling back down to the ground.

The cameraman did not appear to be involved in the fight and might have been hiding from the fracas.

The fight started when a misunderstanding broke out between two groups of men who were drinking at a karaoke shop at 3pm

Keningau district deputy police chief Assist Supt Awang Amit said the fight was sparked when the suspect allegedly got angry with four friends having a drink outside a karaoke centre near the fish market at about 3pm on Sunday.

“Initial reports suggest that the suspect got angry with the group when he saw them with the girls (from the karaoke centre) and hit one of them outside the place,” he said. The four then chased the man only to encounter a group of armed men waiting near the market not far away, he added.

“Initial police investigation found that the cause of the incident was due to a misunderstanding between one of Cyril’s relatives and members of the group,” said Robert. Cyril had been with the group in a karoake shop here near Public Market since 3pm that day drinking alcohol with four invited women, he said.

One of the men had hit Cyril’s relative outside the shop. The relative later told Cyril who was having a drink at the shop. Cyril then together with Analem and Manayoh chased the suspected man, who ran towards the Public Market. When Cyril, Analem and Manayoh arrived at the Public Market, they saw a group of men waiting for them.

It is believed that the four men then attempted to flee but were attacked.

20-year-old Cyril Linus, 39-year-old Manayoh Raw Palamok and 31-year-old Analem Tony Malip suffered slash wounds from a machete

He said one of the victims, Cyril Linus, 20, from Kampung Mamagun Dalit Sook, was slashed with a machete on the left elbow and received five stitches. “Another victim, Analem Tony Malip, 31, from the same village, sustained facial injuries after he fell on the road while escaping.

“The third victim, Manayoh Raw Palamok, 39, from Kampung Binanon Nabawan, was wounded on the left side of the head above the ears after being slashed with a machete,” he said. Robert said Manayoh received 11 stitches and is currently warded at Keningau Hospital in stable condition while doctors are monitoring him.

One of the victims, identified as 39-year-old Manayon Palanok, who is shown being kicked in the face in the video, is being warded at the Keningau district hospital while the other three received outpatient treatment.

Cyril Linus also lost his MyKad, ATM cards, bank account books and driver's license during the incident

During the incident, Cyril lost his MyKad, MayBank and CIMB Bank ATM Cards, BSN and ASB account books and driving licence while fleeing from the attackers.

Police have arrested a 34-year-old fishmonger in connection with the incident

Police confirmed Tuesday that a 34-year-old foreigner had been arrested in connection with the incident that left three men injured. ASP Awang said police are looking for the other individuals involved in the incident and believe all of them are working at the market.

He said the suspect has been remanded for further action, while efforts were in progress to track the other involved suspects. He said the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
