We’ve Hit Our SEA Games Target! Got Public Holiday Ah? Here’s Najib’s Reply
Malaysia achieved its target of 111 gold medals after cyclist Azizulhasni Awang secured a win at the men's sprint category last night.
Malaysia smashed all expectations and achieved its target of 111 gold medals at the 29th SEA Games after cyclist Azizulhasni Awang won the men's sprint title yesterday
The Olympic bronze medalist beat his compatriot Shah Firdaus Sahrom and won the event at the National Velodrome in Nilai yesterday.
"After 10 years and performing in front of my home crowd; parents; in-laws; wife and kids; who rarely see me live in action; and team Azizul as well, makes me proud," he said as quoted by NST.
The target was set earlier this month by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin
The Rembau MP took to Twitter last night to share the good news where he tweeted an image with the hashtag #KitaJuara, indicating that Malaysia has become the overall champions.
With the target being met, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had nothing but praises for the athletes
“So, you (athletes) have changed the mood of the country and the people, no matter what race, religion, culture or colour of skin. All Malaysians are so excited and proud of the contingent’s achievement,” he said after celebrating the country’s achievement of 111 gold medals in the SEA Games at the hotel where National athletes are staying.
When asked if he would announce a special holiday to commemorate the achievement, Najib had this to say:
"On the announcement of a public holiday, Malaysians' two favourite past-times are eating and having public holidays. But wait first, the SEA Games are still ongoing," he said as quoted by The Star Online.
We're hoping for good news! ;)
