If you've been thinking about exploring the Chinese e-commerce platform Pinduoduo but cannot find it on the Google Play Store, don't fret.

You are not alone.

The shopping app, operated by PDD Holdings Inc, has been unavailable on the Play Store since 2023.

According to the Associated Press, Google suspended the app in March 2023 after discovering malware in versions of the software distributed outside its Play Store.

At the time, Google cited "security concerns" and said it was investigating the matter. US lawmakers alleged that such apps could be used to spy on American users.

Google's statement did not mention Temu, another shopping app operated by PDD Holdings, which remains available on the Play Store.

"Google Play Protect enforcement has been set to block installation attempts of these identified malicious apps.

"Users that have malicious versions of the app downloaded to their devices are warned and prompted to uninstall the app," read the statement.

In response, Pinduoduo's spokesperson Kong Ho told TechCrunch that the company disputed the implication that its app was malicious.

More than three years later, Pinduoduo remains unavailable on the Play Store

Meanwhile, Pinduoduo has remained available on Apple's App Store throughout this period.

Although Pinduoduo has not directly addressed its removal from the Play Store outside of its financial reports since March 2023, it has been running numerous advertisements in Malaysia encouraging Android users to download its APK file from its website.

An APK file allows Android users to install an app directly on their devices without going through the Play Store.

While users are generally advised to avoid downloading APK files outside of the Play Store, should you download Pinduoduo this way?

Get to know the company behind the app

Before deciding whether to use Pinduoduo, here is some background on its parent company, PDD Holdings.

Founded in 2015, the company started as an agricultural platform focused on fresh produce before growing into a major social commerce player serving approximately 900 million users.

It is a multinational commerce group incorporated in the Cayman Islands, with its principal executive offices in Dublin, Ireland. It maintains substantial operations in China, and its American depositary shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker PDD.

In the three years since Pinduoduo's removal from the Play Store, PDD Holdings' stock has remained resilient, rising from around USD73 in March 2023, when the suspension was announced, to a peak of USD157 in May 2024.

The stock has since given up some of those gains, trading in the USD70 to USD90 range since late May 2026. These movements do not establish whether the app is safe to use, but they indicate that PDD Holdings remains a viable global business.

In 2023, AP reported that the ban came amid heightened tensions between the US and China over Chinese-owned apps such as TikTok, which some US lawmakers have described as potential national security threats.

During this period, PDD Holdings has not faced the same level of high-profile legal scrutiny over alleged data privacy violations as some other major technology companies.

Ironically, Google, which imposed the ban on Pinduoduo, has faced multiple data privacy lawsuits and paid at least USD2.3 billion in settlements and fines over the past three years.

It is worth noting that there is a securities class action lawsuit against the e-commerce company. The lawsuit alleged that the company misled investors by failing to disclose that its apps contained malware designed to harvest user data, including private text messages, without consent. It also alleged that PDD lacked systems to prevent goods made with forced labour from being sold on Temu and Pinduoduo.

However, on 29 September, a US court dismissed the suit at that stage, ruling that the plaintiffs had failed to adequately substantiate their claims that PDD Holdings misled investors.

So, should you download the app?

In its April annual report, the company said it is working to refute the allegations concerning its apps' cybersecurity concerns.

It acknowledged that the March 2023 media reports continue to pose a reputational challenge for the company, describing them as part of "publicity strategies" that constitute "anti-competitive conduct".

The Malaysian government has not raised cybersecurity concerns about Pinduoduo, but some politicians have called for the platform to be banned or taxed to create a level playing field for local businesses.

Whether to download the app is ultimately your decision. If you choose to proceed, you can find a download link on Pinduoduo's official website here.
