In 2004, Liu Xiuhong was 9 years old when she accidentally smashed a glass bottle of shower gel at a friend's house

Terrified of being beaten for breaking the bottle, which was worth 10 yuan (RM6), she fled into a local vegetable market in Jiangxi province and got lost.

At the time, RM6 was a considerable expense for Liu's family, who were struggling financially.

According to South China Morning Post, an adoptive father took her in and raised her in Guangdong, 788km from her hometown.

Although her birth parents appealed for help on a local television station for three days, they found no trace of her.

Now 31, Liu successfully tracked down her biological family in Jiangxi Province with the help of the police and volunteers

Relatives eagerly waited at the high-speed train station, where Liu broke down in tears as she embraced her younger siblings.

Her mother welcomed her home with gifts and an emotional apology.

"Daughter, I am so sorry," her mother reportedly blamed herself for failing to protect Liu

Presenting her with a gold necklace, watermelon, and handmade noodles, her mother added, "These are the flavours of your hometown."

The viral reunion has since sparked intense debate on Chinese social media platforms regarding strict, punitive, and controversial Asian parenting styles.
