We like to think our kitchens are safe and sterile spaces, but a recent medical case in China suggests otherwise
According to South China Morning Post, a woman surnamed Wang sought treatment at Shenzhen People's Hospital after a painful lump on her arm swelled to the size of a quail egg.
To her shock, doctors operated on the swollen mass and extracted two 10cm-long live worms from her arm.
Doctors identified the worms as a type of parasite known as sparganum, which can easily enter the human body through contaminated food
Wang later recalled that she frequently prepared raw frogs at home, using the same chopping board and knife to slice her cold dishes.
Medical experts noted that the board was likely contaminated with parasite cysts, which were directly transferred to the ready-to-eat food.
The parasites can migrate to vital organs if left unchecked
"Unlike other parasites, spargana do not mature into adults within the human body; instead, they move around through various tissues," said an unidentified doctor from the dermatology department.
The doctor warned that these creatures can migrate to the muscles, eyes, and even the brain, adding, "Do not let carelessness in your kitchen become a loophole for parasites."
