Employees have until 31 August to opt out of the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO)'s Non-Employment Injury Scheme (Lindung 24 Jam)
Those who wish to opt out must complete the liability waiver declaration on the Lindung Faedah portal.
The government announced the opt-out option on 8 July after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged public feedback on the mandatory scheme.
The decision makes participation voluntary instead of requiring employees to contribute 0.75% of their salary, capped at RM45.
Employees who remain in the scheme are entitled to round-the-clock social security coverage throughout their employment, including protection against accidents that occur outside working hours and are not directly related to their duties.
Under the scheme, participants are eligible for the following:
• Medical benefit
• Temporary disablement benefit
• Permanent disablement benefit
• Dependants' benefit
• Funeral benefit
• Physical and vocational rehabilitation
• Constant attendance allowance
• Education benefit
Last week, PERKESO group CEO Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed described the scheme as one of the most affordable social security protection programmes
He urged employees to remain in the scheme, saying its affordable contribution rate was benchmarked against those of members of the International Social Security Association, which comprises social security institutions from nearly 164 countries.
He acknowledged that allowing contributors to opt out could impact the scheme's long-term sustainability and its ability to pay future benefits. As such, PERKESO and the Human Resources Ministry will review the implementation of Lindung 24 by the end of the year.
Mohammed Azman also said the scheme has approved an average of 27 claims a day since its launch, with nearly RM2 million in benefits disbursed during its first month.
He noted that this exceeded the average of 13 claims rejected daily by PERKESO in 2025, as those cases involved accidents that occurred outside working hours and were not covered under the previous employment injury scheme.
