Beginning today, 13 July, employees can opt out of the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO)'s Non-Employment Injury Scheme (Lindung 24 Jam)
The opt-out facility is available online today, where contributors just have to log into the Lindung 24 Jam portal and select the opt-out button.
Introduced in June, the scheme provides round-the-clock protection for eligible employees throughout their employment period, including coverage for accidents that occur outside working hours and are not directly related to their duties.
For example, employees who suffer injuries from a fall on a non-working day may be eligible to make a claim. The same applies to injuries sustained in road accidents outside of work.
The benefits are as follow:
• The cost of medical treatment
• Temporary disablement benefits
• Permanent disablement benefits
• Dependants' benefits
• Constant attendance allowance
• Funeral benefits
• Physical and vocational rehabilitation
• Return To Work (RTW) programme support
• Education benefits
Currently, employees who opt in contribute 0.75% of their monthly salary to the scheme, capped at RM45 for those earning more than RM6,000 a month.
The contribution rate will increase to 1% and 1.25% in two phases over the next six years.

However, following the scheme's one-month rollout, the government announced on 8 July that participation would be voluntary
In an effort to encourage contributors to remain in the scheme, PERKESO group CEO Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed described it as one of the most affordable social security protection programmes available, reported the New Straits Times.
He said the 0.75% contribution rate was among the lowest globally for a social security scheme that provides comprehensive protection against accidents outside working hours. He added that PERKESO had benchmarked its rates against members of the International Social Security Association, which comprises social security institutions from nearly 164 countries.
Mohammed Azman acknowledged that allowing contributors to opt out could affect the fund's long-term sustainability and benefit payments. PERKESO and the Human Resources Ministry will review the implementation of Lindung 24 by the end of the year.
Since its launch, an average of 27 claims have been approved daily, with nearly RM2 million in benefits paid out within the first month.
This was higher than the average 13 daily claims rejected by PERKESO in 2025 as they involved incidents that occurred outside working hours and were not covered under the previous employment injury scheme.
