Dad Sells His Baby For RM14,522 To Buy An iPhone But That’s Not Even The Worst Part
Only in China.
Selling kidneys, stripping naked in public... some people will do just about anything to get their hands on a brand new iPhone, especially in China where Apple products are seen as a sign of status and wealth
A 19-year-old Chinese man recently turned himself over to the police for selling his baby daughter for 23,000 yuan (RM14,552) so that he could buy a brand new iPhone and a motorcycle
Ah Duan, as he is identified by Xiamen Daily News, sold his 18-day-old daughter to a stranger one year ago in the city of Tong'an, in the eastern coastal province of Fujian, China.
Ah Duan had found the buyer on QQ, a popular instant messaging service in China. The young man, a high school dropout, is unemployed and spent most of his time in Internet cafes.
That's not even the worst of it. According to news reports, the teenage dad sold off the baby without the mother's consent!
The baby's biological mother, whose age was not disclosed because she was underaged, worked temporary jobs and was below the age of consent when they conceived the child.
She is also helping to raise her younger brother, who is still in middle school, and taking of her parents, both of whom suffer from disabilities.
Mind-bogglingly, the young mother claimed that she had no idea that it was illegal to sell off a baby, saying, "I myself was adopted, and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them."
She had left the city shortly after the baby was sold, but was eventually tracked down by the police and arrested after the baby's father turned himself in.
Taking into account their difficult circumstances and the offender turning himself in, the judge sentenced the baby's father to three years of jail while the mother will serve a suspended sentence of two and a half years
The buyer also turned himself over to the police soon after the baby's parents were arrested.
As the parents are in no position to raise a child, the baby remains under the care of the buyer's sister.
