UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has openly accepted his party colleague Khairy Jamaluddin's challenge to fight

According to a video story uploaded on Khairy's Instagram account, Zahid was seen arriving for the UMNO annual general assembly in Kuala Lumpur today, 12 January, amidst loud cheers and applause.

Zahid then walks towards Khairy, who is challenging him for the post of UMNO president, and enthusiastically shakes his hands, while remarking that he is "ready to fight" him.

Responding to Zahid, Khairy recorded a clip in front of the former's portrait at the party headquarters, saying that the president is "brave"

In the video, Khairy goes on to say that Zahid accepting the challenge shows that he is not scared.

"That means that if there is any effort to subdue democracy in UMNO by tabling a motion for the top two positions to not be contested, it is contrary to the bravery shown by our president," says Khairy.

"I salute him."

This comes amidst rumours that UMNO president and deputy president posts will not be contested in the upcoming party elections

Earlier, a group of UMNO leaders had called for the top two posts not to be contested.

According to Khairy, not putting the top two posts would be detrimental to democracy in UMNO.

"Stop this madness. I think the president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) is a fighter who does not fear taking on challengers (for the Umno presidency). Make room for contests. Don't kill off democracy in UMNO," he said.

The UMNO polls are expected to be held before 19 May this year.
