Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has announced that national para shuttler Cheah Liek Hou will be receiving a RM1 million reward and a monthly allowance of RM5,000 for life for winning a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics

In a Facebook post, Yeoh said she is so proud of Cheah's achievements and that it was so wonderful to hear Negaraku being played at La Chapelle Arena in Paris.

Cheah defeated Indonesia's Suryo Nugroho 21-13, 21-15 in the men's singles SU5 (upper body impairment) badminton final on Monday, 3 September.

"As promised, Liek Hou will receive a RM1,000,000 reward from the government and a lifetime monthly allowance of RM5,000 through the Olympic Sports Incentive Scheme (SITO)," Yeoh wrote.

The 36-year-old is now a two-time Paralympics champion, having won his first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Yeoh also urged Malaysians to watch the movie Gold, a film by Malaysian director Adrian Teh, about the para-athlete's journey to his first Paralympic gold in 2020

"Liek Hou, I know your father would have been very proud of you for winning your second Paralympic gold!

"This is another world class athlete who is a go-getter, we never had to worry about his mental strength. Thank you for making every Malaysian proud," she added.

Cheah's journey to the Paralympics was an 18-year wait. Read more about the shuttler's story here:
