Malaysia will be hosting the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games

The Youth and Sports Ministry announced on Wednesday, 28 August, that the federal government has accepted the offer from the Southeast Asian Games Federation to host the biennial multi-sport event involving 11 countries.

According to the ministry, the decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, after taking into account the joint hosting commitment by three states.

Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang have agreed to co-host the Games with Kuala Lumpur.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the three states have also agreed to bear the total cost of organising the Games, which is estimated at RM700 million

According to Bernama, Yeoh said the estimate is based on the costs incurred when Malaysia last hosted the 2017 SEA Games.

She said the allocations from the respective state governments were a key reason the Cabinet agreed to organise the 2027 SEA Games.

"Sarawak agreed to cover 50% of the organising costs, which is more than RM300 million, Sabah RM100 million, and Penang RM15 million," she told reporters on Thursday, 29 August.

Yeoh revealed that other states also expressed interest in co-hosting but did not agree to share the cost of organising the Games

Malaysia last hosted the SEA Games in 2017, where the country emerged as the overall champion, winning 145 gold, 92 silver, and 86 bronze medals.
