Running an animal shelter is no easy feat, let alone running it independently with sole earnings.

But that's exactly what Ong Siew Hiang does.

With 47 stray dogs under her care, Ong runs a burger stall through the night in order to sustain her safe haven for animals, Survivor Shelter.

She cooks and sells burgers at a little stall in Rock Cafe in Bandar Sunway to cover rescue costs.

Having started rescuing strays in her 30s, Ong, who is now 59, is a dedicated worker who would rather depend on herself than on public donations to run the shelter

Speaking to Malay Mail, Ong shared that she's actually a trained chef in Thai food and used to operate her own restaurant. But she had to give that up when her partner was struck with breast cancer.

With the advice of a friend, Ong decided to open up her own burger stall six years ago. All of her earnings go to the welfare of the rescued strays at her shelter, which is located in Semenyih.

By supporting her burger business, you not only get to enjoy a good meal, but are also helping leave a positive impact on the lives of these animals

Malay Mail reported that on average, Ong needs RM6,000 to RM7,000 a month to run the shelter, which includes employing one helper who looks after the dogs.

Some of the rescued strays are victims of hit-and-runs, and Ong has paid for their medical expenses and nursed them back to health.

Ong offers six types of tasty burgers at her stall — where all of the patties are made from scratch with her own recipe

They include:
1. Pork burger
2. Bacon burger
3. Luncheon meat and egg burger
4. Fish burger
5. Smoked duck burger
6. Coney dog with minced chicken
