AI-generated fruit characters are currently looking for love on TikTok

The micro-series, based on the hit show Love Island, features animated characters like 'Strawberina' and a buff, open-shirt 'Bananito'.

The series, Fruit Love Island, was created in March by a mysterious TikTok account called Ai Cinema. One episode, titled 'New Dates… New Doubts', has already racked up 39 million views.

For context, the big-budget 2025 Eurovision Song Contest reached 166 million people.

Many critics have dismissed the videos as "AI slop", referring to low-quality content created to appeal to the masses. However, the viewership suggests a demand for media that helps people unwind.

Ludmila Lupinacci, a lecturer in digital media at the University of Leeds, told AFP the trend helps people have a laugh.

This desire, too, may be heightened when social platforms provide negative experiences.

"The AI quirks might indeed be part of the appeal," Lupinacci said.

She added that these glitches make the segments funnier and more engaging for those who enjoy 'hate-watching'.

Despite visual inconsistencies, such as arms changing colour, the 'Ai Cinema' account remains popular

The creators recently thanked fans in a series finale posted on 1 April 2026.
