An artificial intelligence law firm has secured a court victory in the UK, in what is believed to be the first case won with the help of an AI lawyer

According to The Guardian, freelance HR consultant Tamires Camal Taquidir paid the firm Garfield AI about 400 pounds (RM2,200) to issue a legal letter and file court proceedings over an unpaid debt of 7,000 pounds (RM38,000).

The AI handled all pre-trial legal work, including preparing four witness statements and compiling a bundle of documents for a three-hour trial at Wandsworth County Court on 14 May.

Garfield AI, which was authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) last year, prepared the case before hiring a human barrister to represent the client

Firm co-founder Philip Young called the case a "landmark moment" for justice, noting that many small businesses often write off debts due to high litigation costs.

The court ultimately ruled in favour of Taquidir, who expressed relief after facing an intimidating counterclaim from the defendant

"I was owed money for work I had done, but it felt like the process of recovering it could be too stressful, expensive, and time-consuming.

"Garfield made it possible for me to pursue the claim and keep going," Taquidir said.

Dominic Li, the barrister who represented Taquidir, said Garfield AI presented the case "clearly and efficiently", but added, "The advocacy at trial remained essential and a fundamentally human exercise."
