You Now Require A Permit To Operate Drones In Malaysia
This includes those flying below 400ft for wedding and commercial videos, as well as for recreational use.
If you're flying a drone in Malaysia, you'll now need a permit for every flight, regardless of the purpose — whether it is for a wedding, a commercial video, or just for fun
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has introduced stricter regulations, requiring approval before any drone can take off.
This applies to all drones, regardless of size or risk level, including those flying below 400ft for weddings, commercial use, or recreational purposes.
The permit fee for drones under 20kg is RM250, and applications must be submitted at least 14 days in advance
CAAM explains that these changes aim to improve safety and better manage the growing number of drone operators.
They also want to ensure that all pilots follow the proper procedures to prevent accidents or disruptions to air traffic.
In 2024, CAAM reported instances of drones being used without proper approval, particularly for training
Flying without a permit could result in fines or legal action under Malaysia's civil aviation laws.
In fact, failing to register a drone can lead to penalties of up to RM50,000 or three years in jail. For companies, the fine can reach up to RM100,000, according to a report by the New Straits Times last year.
