A fireworks and drone show resembling a portal from another dimension has gone viral on Chinese social media

The display, titled "Tears of the Gate of Heaven", was part of a drone and fireworks show which held over the Sky Theatre in Liuyang, Hunan, China on 7 December.

The show featured 700 drones forming a circular light pattern in the night sky, symbolising a celestial gate. From the centre of this "gate", a cascade of fireworks rained down, creating the illusion of shimmering tears falling from the heavens.

The show was designed by Qingtai Fireworks Company and lasted about seven minutes.

About 700 drones were used for the show.

The "Tears of the Gate of Heaven" show was actually inspired by the company's founder, who missed his late mother

According to Chinese site Sohu, the 70-year-old founder missed his mother very much. He never had a photo of her as she had died at a young age.

The founder's granddaughter wanted to pay tribute to her great-grandmother's memory and conceived the unique vision for the fireworks display. She imagined the fireworks as tears falling from the Gate of Heaven, symbolising her great-grandmother's descent to earth.

Numerous videos capturing the show have become a trending topic on Douyin, accumulating more than 12 million views on the platform.
