Both the standard RM599 model and the upgraded RM699 version feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

For this review, I tried out the RM699 variant. More on the difference between both variants below but first, let's look at the similarities.

Both earphones carry an IP57 durability rating, meaning they can survive full submersion in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes.

They also come in only one colour: white. This means dirt and dust appear more visible on the earphones. I hope that in future variants, Apple includes a darker colour option.

The ANC cuts out 50% more background noise than the previous generation, making it ideal for dampening the LRT's daily drone

Both models also support Live Translation, which comes in handy when travelling abroad.

While sound quality and bass response are impressive across the lineup, the base model feels stripped down. Apple removed touch volume controls and wireless charging from the RM599 version to push buyers towards the higher tier.

Paying the extra RM100 for the RM699 version unlocks many useful and helpful features

The RM699 variant features swipeable stem volume controls, an audible speaker for Find My tracking, and an extra hour of battery life (the base model only features four hours).

It also adds compatibility with Qi charging and Apple Watch wireless chargers.

The open-ear design still lets in the occasional nearby chatter, however, compared to previous versions, the AirPods 5 feels like a huge step up

Audio quality feels much more improved. Listening to music feels more immersive and louder.

Compared to the AirPods 3, I found myself reducing the volume slightly on the latest model.

For Apple users who are familiar with the AirPods and are looking to upgrade, the RM699 model is definitely the smarter choice due to its added convenience and battery perks.
