"We are looking for a country manager in Malaysia to lead and launch our ride-hailing business," read a recent job listing on LinkedIn by Bolt, an Estonian e-hailing company with operations spanning 45 countries

The job listing, posted about two weeks ago, outlines key responsibilities including "leading the market, developing, and nurturing critical relationships to grow Bolt's business, strengthen the company's position, and build drivers and riders' growth, engagement, and retention while managing a high-performing team".

If all goes well for Bolt, which was founded by a 19-year-old high school student, Malaysia will become the firm's second market entry in Southeast Asia after Thailand, where the company entered in mid-2020.

However, capturing the Malaysian market won't be easy for Bolt, considering the presence of several well-established e-hailing firms such as Grab and AirAsia Ride. There are also a handful of other competitors in the market, including Maxim, EzCab, and inDrive.

The company's base of operations is expected to be in Kuala Lumpur

In Thailand, Bolt holds the second-largest market share for ride-hailing services, operating in seven local cities. The company provides services utilising cars, motorcycles, and taxis in Thailand.

While the company's platform is similar to that of Grab's super app and offers similar services, regulatory restrictions in Malaysia prohibit ride-hailing services from offering two-wheelers.

Meanwhile, the company has been nominated for the 2024 Rider's Choice Award in three categories: best operators, best ride-hail & carshare, and best food & grocery company.
