Google is officially shutting down its classic Assistant on mobile devices as it begins transitioning users to the Gemini AI chatbot in September
Google confirmed in emails to users that it will shut down the classic virtual assistant on Android devices from 4 September.
The search giant originally planned to retire the service in late 2025. However, with its generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Gemini now ready to take over, the migration is finally proceeding.
This shutdown will not just affect mobile phones
Connected gadgets like smartwatches, headphones, and vehicles running Android Auto are also being migrated to Gemini.
While Android phones are losing access, Android-powered televisions, set-top boxes, and vehicles with Google built-in will keep the classic Assistant for now.
Devices that fail to meet Gemini's minimum hardware specifications will also get a temporary reprieve.
For everyone else, the switch brings a major shift in how you interact with your device.
Where Assistant was predictable and straightforward, Gemini relies on complex AI tools that can sometimes lead to unexpected conversations or bizarre tangents
It might take a few weeks for the rollout to reach every device after 4 September.
Until then, you can enjoy your predictable "Hey Google" commands before the chatbot future takes over completely.
