We send and receive hundreds (maybe even thousands) of texts on messaging apps every day, often without a second thought

This isn't even counting all the funny videos or news updates we forward to our friend and family groups.

However, have you ever considered how private your conversations actually are?

A lot of things we send via messaging apps are private, and meant for our friends and family, but not meant to be shared with the world. Be it pictures of your cute nephew, private conversations with your bestie, or sensitive financial information, we often take for granted that every message we send should be safeguarded for privacy.

After all, the last thing you'll want is for your private messages to be compromised, or worse still, used against you in the future! :O

Curious to see how private you are when messaging friends and loved ones? Take this quiz to find out:

Whether you're kiasu, kiasi, or kanchiong, what's important is not waiting until the last minute to protect your privacy on messaging apps.

Wanna increase your privacy on WhatsApp but don't know how? You might be due for a Privacy Checkup!

To help you control your privacy easily, WhatsApp has come up with a simple Privacy Checkup that lets you adjust all important privacy settings in one location.

All you have to do is: Open WhatsApp > Select 'Settings' > Select 'Privacy' > Start checkup

Once you've clicked into the Privacy Checkup, you can control all kinds of settings:

1. Choose who can contact you
You can control who is allowed to add you to group chats. You're also able to silence calls from unknown contacts, or block selected contacts from reaching you.

2. Control your personal info
Choose who can view your profile photo and online status. You can also customise your Read Receipts, which lets people know if you've read their message.

3. Add more privacy to your chats
For new chats, you can set messages to disappear after a certain time. If you prefer to be more discreet, you can prevent message text from being shown in message notifications or allow them to be viewed once. You can also enable end-to-end encrypted backups for an added layer of privacy.

4. Add more protection to your account
For those who prefer added protection, you can require Face ID to open WhatsApp on your device. You can also set two-step verification to access your WhatsApp account.

Additionally, WhatsApp has various privacy features in place to ensure that your personal messages stay between you and whoever you send them to

WhatsApp messages are protected by end-to-end encryption by default, so messages and calls stay private to you. No one else can read or listen to them, not even WhatsApp.

Besides that, you can make use of features like Chat Lock, which password protects your most personal chats, as well as Disappearing Messages, whereby you can control which messages stick around and for how long. You can also set photos to View Once, so they disappear after being opened.

Another neat feature is that you can now leave groups silently. Only the group admins will be notified, but the rest of the group won't.
