A mobile phone has survived a 30,607-metre drop from the stratosphere without any damage, setting a new world record for phone cases
The test took place on 24 June above Kiruna, Sweden. Case maker RhinoShield teamed up with aerospace firm Sent Into Space to put its AirX case through the extreme test.
The team carried an iPhone 17 Pro into the stratosphere using a high-altitude balloon. They released the device from 30,607m, more than three times the typical cruising altitude of a commercial airliner.

The device fell for about 25 minutes, enduring severe weather and temperatures as low as -60℃. To meet Guinness World Records rules, the team used no parachute, heating system, or extra padding. The phone case itself had to make direct contact with the ground first.
After the drop, the search team spent over five hours looking for the device. A tracker narrowed the landing area down to roughly 2km. Once found, team members confirmed the phone still worked perfectly. The device could turn on and off, place calls, and take photos, while its outer body remained fully intact.
The test earned RhinoShield and Sent Into Space the official record for the highest phone drop in a case onto natural landforms
RhinoShield Brand Experience Manager Mujou Hsiao said engineers put the recyclable AirX case through freezing and pressure tests before launch.
The design uses air cushions inspired by car airbags and sports shoes to absorb heavy shocks.
