The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has suspended the Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the Chery Omoda 5, halting all new registrations of the SUV nationwide
The suspension follows a recent safety incident in Johor Bahru, where an Omoda 5 suffered a rear axle detachment while on the road.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli told Free Malaysia Today that the decision was an immediate precautionary measure to safeguard road users. Enforcement officers will focus on specific batches and variants that may be affected by structural vulnerabilities.
JPJ will audit the Omoda 5's manufacturing and assembly lines at Inokom's plant in Kulim, Kedah
The inspection will cover component suppliers, quality control protocols, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance, and weld joint testing standards.
JPJ has instructed Chery Malaysia to cross-reference part numbers, vehicle identification numbers (VIN), and assembly timelines to isolate all at-risk units.
The distributor must launch a recall campaign to inspect and replace faulty parts free of charge. Authorities emphasised that the VTA suspension will remain in place until the manufacturer has fully addressed all safety risks.
Social media footage posted on 6 October showed an Omoda 5 stranded on Jalan Pandan near AEON Mall Tebrau City, with its rear suspension and wheel assembly detached from the chassis
The incident marks the second major recall involving the pre-facelift Omoda 5's torsion beam rear setup.
In April 2024, a similar component failure prompted JPJ to launch an investigation, leading Chery to recall 600 units due to improperly calibrated welding equipment.

Chery Malaysia launched a recall campaign shortly after JPJ's announcement
Affected vehicle owners can verify their VINs on Chery's Product Update portal or contact the Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888 for further instructions.
The original Omoda 5, introduced locally in July 2023, was succeeded by the facelifted Chery 05, which replaced the torsion beam with a multi-link rear suspension system.
Both the newer Chery 05 and the fully electric Omoda E5 use the multi-link configuration and are unaffected by the suspension issue.
