Malaysia has emerged as a potential target for coordinated cyberattacks due to its expanding digital infrastructure and vocal diplomatic stance on international conflicts, particularly the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warned Parliament today
Addressing a question from Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) on the severity of incoming security risks, Anwar said that while classified operational details cannot be made public, available intelligence unequivocally puts the country on high alert.
"Malaysia is certainly among those considered a target," he informed the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday, 3 November, as reported by the New Straits Times.
The prime minister stressed that digital threats are no longer distant anomalies, pointing to a wave of hostile incursions across major industrialised nations
Recent foreign breaches shut down Belgium's national taxation portal, compromised the central population records of nearly nine million Danish citizens, crippled the US Federal Election Commission's filing database for 41 hours, and exposed personal records belonging to more than 100,000 Japanese police officers.
Anwar noted that international instability has prompted governments in Canada, Japan, and the European Union to advise their populations to maintain emergency food reserves.
Putrajaya is also tracking regional spillover risks linked to Middle Eastern hostilities, military flashpoints in Yemen, and volatile shipping lanes along the Red Sea
Following an emergency National Security Council (NSC) assessment held yesterday, Anwar proposed that NSC director-general Datuk Raja Nushirwan Zainal Abidin conduct a closed-door briefing for all government and opposition lawmakers within the next two days.
The classified briefing will apprise parliamentarians of the latest intelligence received by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The country's top administrative officials moved to fortify vital national assets today
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar led a high-level coordination summit with departmental heads this afternoon, while Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour convened a special risk session with domestic financial institutions.
Anwar unveiled a five-point national resilience strategy to shield essential services
The measures focus on harmonising ministerial responses, strengthening defensive posture against cross-border attacks, and shielding critical national infrastructure, including energy grids, transport hubs, banking institutions, and domestic food supply pipelines.
The remaining initiatives involve advancing defensive software capabilities across law enforcement bodies and raising public vigilance against digital intrusion.
