Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd (ETCM) has handed over two units of the Nissan Kicks e-POWER crossover to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for a two-month trial
Officially launched on 5 August, the evaluation carries no purchasing obligation for the police force. Officers will deploy both vehicles during active daily patrols, testing their speed, comfort, and reliability under demanding working conditions.
The trial offers PDRM a valuable opportunity to evaluate how electrified technology can support frontline mobility needs. Throughout the two-month assessment, officers will monitor the vehicles' capabilities, fuel efficiency, and overall handling during routine law enforcement operations.
Bukit Aman Logistics and Technology Department Director Commissioner of Police Redzuan Abd Hamid noted that testing new automotive technology under real-world conditions remains essential before making future fleet decisions
He stated that insights gathered from the trial will directly guide ongoing efforts to identify practical and cost-effective vehicles for frontline officers.
ETCM Executive Vice President Christopher Tan explained that Nissan developed its e-POWER technology to make electric driving simple and accessible.
Unlike standard hybrid systems, the Nissan Kicks e-POWER uses an electric motor to drive its wheels at all times. A 1.2-litre petrol engine operates strictly as an onboard generator to charge the battery pack.
This unique setup eliminates the need for plug-in charging stations, allowing officers to refuel quickly at standard petrol kiosks without worrying about battery range or charging downtime.

Delivering 129PS and 28 Nm of instant torque, the crossover offers a claimed fuel economy of 21.7km per litre (4.61 litres per 100km), with local retail prices starting from RM113,800 on the road without insurance.
The vehicle's responsive electric motor acceleration delivers immediate power, which could prove beneficial in urban response situations and high-density traffic manoeuvres.
