Malaysia may get its first affordable, home-made electric vehicle (EV) as soon as 2025

This is according to International Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

Zafrul took to X, formerly Twitter, on 26 March to hint that Perodua might be able to launch its first affordable EV by the end of 2025.

"Affordable EVs from Perodua next year?" Tengku Zafrul hinted on X

"When it comes to EVs, many complain about their high prices," Tengku Zafrul's post on X read.

"Therefore, Perodua has been chosen as the leading producer of affordable EVs locally under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP2030)."

He added that he had discussions with Perodua on 25 March to learn more about the progress of their EV project and how the government can assist in making it a success.

The goal of the project, Zafrul added, is for the people's wellbeing and the nation's economy.

MITI previously asserted that Malaysia's national carmakers could introduce the country's maiden EV by 2025

Emphasising affordability, both Proton and Perodua aim to offer locally assembled EVs priced under RM100,000, in contrast to imported EVs.

Perodua's EV project remains somewhat mysterious, with only a scale model resembling the Electric Motion Online concept unveiled last year.
