A cybersecurity-conscious son has decided to buy his parents a standard coffee maker after discovering that their Internet-connected smart machine generated a staggering 1TB of internal network traffic over just 10 days

The user, known as Nomad, shared screenshots of the extraordinary bandwidth consumption on social media platform X after performing routine network maintenance for his family.

Having worked in the IT sector for over a decade, Nomad regularly manages his parents' home Wi-Fi environment remotely to ensure their network runs smoothly.

Tinkering with the device's diagnostic logs revealed that while the appliance generated a massive amount of data, most of the traffic remained confined to the local home network rather than being sent to external servers over the Internet

However, the sheer volume of internal data packets created severe bandwidth bottlenecks, causing the wireless access point to saturate and slowing down other connected devices in the household.

IT professionals suspect that the heavy traffic stemmed from a software bug or a repeating loop defect within the appliance's network protocol.

Although troubleshooting the exact root cause remained an option, Nomad concluded that keeping a household appliance connected to the Internet carried unnecessary operational risks.

"It's not worth keeping an IoT (Internet of Things) device connected that has the capability of bugging out and causing saturation like this did," Nomad noted.

He added that while he does not police his parents' purchasing choices, the incident served as a practical learning experience about the potential drawbacks of smart home gadgets.

To resolve the disruption, Nomad disconnected the unit from the network and replaced it with a traditional non-connected appliance

Similar incidents across the consumer technology sector, such as smart washing machines or connected refrigerators experiencing firmware glitches that trigger excessive background data pings, underscore the growing network management challenges associated with modern household automation.
