Streaming giant Spotify has quietly begun testing an automated ad-skipping tool for select paid subscribers
According to a report by media outlet Semafor, the feature lets listeners effortlessly fast-forward through podcast advertisements, provided those promotions are not sold directly by the platform.

Major audio networks were quick to sound the alarm, claiming the button threatens independent show monetisation.
According to Mashable, Publication Podnews described the update as a "significant threat" to ad-funded shows.
Crooked Media co-founder Tommy Vietor expressed his frustration publicly, posting on X that it is "very cool" of Spotify to "try and destroy the podcast industry".

Spotify defends the change as a boost for user engagement
The audio streaming platform argued that reducing skipping friction actually keeps users listening longer overall.
It stressed that the feature remains in early testing.
The controversy follows previous creator pushback, including a play-count display rollout that the platform partially reversed last year.
