A groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) tool is revolutionising the treatment of male infertility
Developed by researchers at Columbia University Fertility Center, this innovative system can analyse millions of images from a single semen sample in less than an hour, detecting sperm cells that conventional diagnostic methods often miss.
According to CNN, the breakthrough offers renewed hope for couples struggling to conceive, particularly those facing non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA), a severe form of male infertility where sperm production is extremely low.
The AI's ability to identify even rare, viable sperm could eliminate the need for more invasive procedures.
In a remarkable success story, the new AI system has been credited with the first reported pregnancy in a couple who had been trying to start a family for 18 years
The anonymous couple underwent the novel Sperm Tracking and Recovery (STAR) System and are now expected to have their baby in December.
Columbia University Fertility Center director Dr Zev Williams said the couple had provided a sperm sample that highly skilled technicians spent two days examining, but struggled to find any viable sperm.
"They didn't find any. We brought it to the AI-based STAR System. In one hour, it found 44 sperm. So right then, we realised, 'Wow, this is really a game-changer. This is going to make such a big difference for patients,'" Williams said.
