China recently hosted a groundbreaking event where four teams of humanoid robots competed in fully autonomous 3-on-3 football matches

The event, held Beijing, marked a significant step forward, showcasing artificial intelligence (AI) technology rather than traditional athletic prowess.

AFP touted the matches as China's first of its kind and served as a preview for the upcoming World Humanoid Robot Games, also set to take place in Beijing.

A crucial aspect of these matches was the complete autonomy of the robots; they operated solely on AI-driven strategies without any human intervention

Equipped with advanced visual sensors, the robots were able to identify the ball and navigate the field with impressive agility.

They were also designed to self-right after a fall, though some still required staff to carry them off the field, adding a touch of realism to the spectacle.

China is actively accelerating its development of AI-powered humanoid robots, utilising sports competitions such as marathons, boxing, and football as practical proving grounds

Cheng Hao, founder and CEO of Booster Robotics, the company that provided the robot players, highlighted that sports offer an ideal testing environment for humanoid robots.

"In the future, we may arrange for robots to play football with humans. That means we must ensure the robots are completely safe," he said.

He noted that these competitions help to fast-track the advancement of both algorithms and integrated hardware-software systems.
