Meta is testing a more private way to share your passing thoughts on Threads

Designed for smaller, curated audiences, the 'Threads Friends' feature acts as a dedicated close friends list for the app.

Currently rolling out in Ireland, Italy, and Japan, it allows users to broadcast their posts to a select group of up to 50 people, keeping these updates completely hidden from the rest of the platform.

If this concept rings a bell, you are not alone. The feature bears a striking resemblance to a short-lived tool that X (previously Twitter) introduced in 2022.

X's version allowed users to limit their audience to groups of up to 150 followers. However, the company unceremoniously scrapped the feature just a year later.

To streamline the setup process, Meta is taking a slightly automated approach. A spokesperson noted that the app will automatically suggest a customisable list of followers you interact with the most.

Once your inner circle is established, a green bubble appears at the top of your feed. Tapping this reveals exclusive posts shared by your group within the last 24 hours.

While full visual details remain under wraps, product design director Laura Javier offered a sneak peek, showcasing what these exclusive posts look like in practice.

She also revealed a clever Easter egg that changes the official 'Threads Friends' label to a much punchier 'Thriends'.

Meta has not confirmed when this test might expand globally. For now, you will just have to hope a friend in one of the test countries adds you to their list.
