The minister said the move aims to reduce the risk of children being exposed to inappropriate content and cyberbullying

Fahmi previously stressed that WhatsApp and its parent company, Meta, should take responsibility for tackling cyberbullying on their platforms.

He added that there have been several cases where students were added to WhatsApp groups where they were subjected to cyberbullying.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently looking into the matter, particularly the misuse of communication applications.

The government previously highlighted that those under 16 are restricted from opening social media accounts, but several platforms have yet to fully implement the rule

In light of this, parents are urged to play their part in monitoring their children's digital activities.
