If you've been scrolling through Twitter and suddenly realised that the tweets aren't appearing anymore, this is probably why

The short of it is, Elon Musk has set a temporary cap on the number of tweets a user can see in a day. This initially happened last Saturday, when a number of users reported that they were bombarded with a sudden 'rate limit exceeded' prompt on their profiles.

The rate limit applies to both unverified and verified accounts, with the former being limited to only 600 posts a day, while verified accounts can see up to 6,000 posts a day. Newer unverified accounts can only see up to 300 tweets a day.

Currently, a verified account subscription ranges from RM35 a month for web, RM50 a month for iOS or Android, RM369 per year on web, and RM519.90 per year on Android or iOS.

Essentially, Musk introduced the rate limit to address extreme levels of data scraping and screen manipulation. According to opoyi, data scraping is when an application is used to extract information from a website. As such, the rate limit acts as a content protection measure, at least, according to Musk.

However, in a separate tweet, Musk claims that the rate limit will soon increase

This ranges from 8,000 tweets for verified users, 800 for unverified, and 400 for new and unverified.

Musk also stated that the daily rate limit is temporary, but we don't have an exact timeline as to how long it will be.
