The news was announced by Uber on their Facebook page last Friday.

Uber, the latest in the ride sharing scene has caused a lot of buzz here in Malaysia. Awhile back, we published a story that addressed the legality of the application. Don't sweat it, Uber is legal in Malaysia.

Popular transportation booking service “Uber” has not been declared illegal by local authorities, contrary to several news reports, and can continue operations provided its vehicles and drivers are appropriately licensed

The MCMC stated that after engaging with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) about Uber’s services currently available in the local mobile app markets, “both agencies are of the view that the mobile app Uber has so far not breached any laws of Malaysia

Unlike in KL and Johor, only one vehicle option is currently available in Penang due to the lack of drivers. So, bear in mind Penangnites, your waiting time may be longer.

In terms of vehicle, there’s only a single “Uber” option and their website lists Proton Saga, Perodua Myvi and Toyota Vios as their available options.

For a start, there’s limited number of vehicles so wait times would be longer than usual. This is expected to be improved over time once they have recruit more drivers onto their system.

The base fare for each ride is RM2. Uber charges at RM0.35 every minute and RM0.70 per kilometre.
