Meta has announced a massive privacy upgrade for WhatsApp that will soon eliminate the need to share your personal phone number with strangers
According to AFP, the tech giant revealed on Monday, 29 June, that users will soon be able to choose unique usernames to connect with others.
This feature means your phone number remains hidden when you are added to large group chats or messaging a business for the first time.
To keep things secure, Meta confirmed there will be no searchable public directory, meaning people must know your exact username to contact you
With over three billion users on the platform, getting first dibs on your preferred username may prove difficult.
Fortunately, Meta said creators, small businesses, and organisations can claim usernames they already use on Facebook or Instagram.
WhatsApp plans to roll out the username reservations gradually worldwide over the coming months
Users will receive a notification within the application as soon as the feature becomes available in their respective countries.
