There are soooo many Malaysian elements in the movie, guys! <3

Gais, have y'all watched Disney's latest animated movie, Raya and the Last Dragon, yet?

Having hit local cinemas just last week, the movie tells the story of Raya, a lone warrior who sets out to find Sisu, the last dragon. Together, the pair must find a way to stop an evil force threatening the land of Kumandra.

If you haven't watched it yet, you totally should! We absolutely loved how the movie beautifully displays Southeast Asian culture, and okay, we'll even admit that it totally made us cry. :')

We recently got the chance to sit down for a chat with some of the movie's all-Asian cast, as well as the filmmakers.

Watch the full video of our interview with them below:

We talked to:
- Kelly Marie Tran (voice of Raya)
- Awkwafina (voice of Sisu)
- Thalia Tran (voice of Little Noi)
- Izaac Wang (voice of Boun)
- Don Hall (Director)
- Carlos López Estrada (Director)
- Qui Nguyen (Writer)
- Adele Lim (Writer)
- Osnat Shurer (Producer)

With this movie being the first animated Disney movie to be inspired by Southeast Asian culture, Kelly Marie Tran said that "it feels awesome!" to be part of it

Kelly Marie Tran: "It feels awesome! Truly an honour to be a part of it. And to be the one person that is chosen to play this character in the particular movie that is made at this particular time, when I was just in the right place at the right time, and all the lines sort of lined up. It's a miracle!"

Awkwafina excitedly gushed about how she didn't expect the character of Sisu to look so much like her

Awkwafina: "Like my eyes, my teeth. You know, someone, another interviewer said my lips, and I was like, oh I didn't know my lips too."

Gowri: "Yeah, when Sisu's in her human form, she really does look like you!"

Awkwafina: "I know, that's awesome, dude! I don't even know how you can integrate stuff like that."

Omg guys, according to writer Adele Lim (who is a fellow Malaysian btw!), the movie has soooo many Malaysian elements and we're just so proud <3

Adele Lim: "It's not just one or two things. Even in Raya's weapon, which is inspired by the keris, or the introduction which is done in wayang kulit, or the gamelan music.

"You can just go on and on and on, in terms of like, you know, what aspects of Malaysian culture and Southeast Asian culture have inspired all the details of Kumandra."

You know how Disney movies always have Easter eggs? The directors gave us a lil hint on what to look out for, teeheee! ;)

Carlos López Estrada: "Yeah, there's a little sequence that has back to back shots with hidden Mickeys. Those shots, there are like five or six, that have like tiny little hidden Mickeys."

Don Hall: "Yeah, I would encourage people to watch the land of Talon very closely."

If you haven't already, make sure to catch Raya and the Last Dragon in local cinemas nationwide!
