Imagine being so tiny that a toothbrush is the perfect tool for a relaxing head message

That's the reality for Laszlo, an adorable pygmy marmoset who recently went viral on TikTok, racking up over 7.5 million views. Netizens fell head over heels for its blissful reaction to a toothbrush head massage, with its head dwarfed by the bristles.

At little over a year old, Laszlo is a rescued baby pygmy marmoset, currently under the care of the Rare Species Conservatory Foundation (RSCF) in South Florida, US.

Pygmy marmosets are the world's smallest monkeys, weighing about as much as a stick of butter, according to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

Even at their largest, an adult pygmy marmoset is roughly the same size as the average newborn puppy or kitten. At birth, they weigh just 15 to 20g and are smaller than a human thumb.

As for the toothbrush, it isn't just some self-care hack.

The bristles mimic the feeling of marmoset parents' fingernails as they groom their young.

Hailing from South America, these kiwi-looking primates are very social creatures.

"Laszlo is very tiny and loves being groomed using a toothbrush. Grooming is vital to all primates and establishes strong family bonds," RSCF said.

While these tiny primates are ridiculously adorable, the RSCF emphasises that they are not suitable pets. A pygmy marmoset's biggest threat comes from the illegal pet trade. Their cuteness and tiny size make them highly sought-after exotic pets, leading to heavy trafficking and exploitation.

Sadly, these tiny primates are incredibly vulnerable in their natural habitat. Their small size makes them easy prey for predators like cats, hawks, and snakes, while deforestation and climate change pose significant threats to their survival.

Once Laszlo matures, he will be placed in an enclosure with another pygmy marmoset and will not be handled by the staff again.
