Mustafa Centre will be opening its first Malaysian flagship store in Johor Bahru

The popular retailer from Singapore will be taking over the now-closed Capital City Mall (also known as Capital 21) located in Tampoi. The mall was shut down in early 2020 due to financial constraints.

As reported by Bernama, in a statement released on Singapore Exchange, Mustafa's managing director Mustaq Ahmad stated that "Capital City Mall meets many of the requirements for [our] first flagship store in Malaysia". He mentioned a couple of key features, which are the proximity to Singapore and ample floor area.

Mustafa Centre has been operating in Singapore for five decades, opening its doors in 1973

The retail legend started as a small shop on Serangoon Road, and in 1985, it expanded into a department store on the ground floor of Serangoon Plaza. In 1995, Mustafa Centre was established as a stand-alone mall, with floors upon floors of consumer goods.

Nestled in the heart of Little India on Syed Alwi Road, Mustafa Centre has been a popular tourist stop for the island and is most well known for being open 24/7.

"This is like KL's Mydin store on steroids," one mall visitor wrote in a review of the Singapore store on Tripadvisor

The same mall visitor reviewed that their experience visiting the mall was like "navigating a maze." Even after encircling the mall three times, they were not able to finish exploring the whole complex.

They mentioned the ocean of people and overflowing racks of merchandise ranging from groceries to jewellery to luggage, and electronic appliances. Mustafa is also said to be known for their affordable prices.

They advise people who visit: "If you like an item, take it immediately."

This gives an idea on what to expect when Mustafa Centre opens its doors to patrons in Malaysia. Can't wait!
