Here's How To Make Food Last Longer In The Fridge And Limit Grocery Trips

It can be quite difficult to practise social distancing when you're out buying essentials, no matter how hard you try.

Thankfully, one netizen shared some helpful tips to make food last longer in the fridge.
Now, you can limit trips to the grocery store throughout the Movement Control Order (MCO) period!
On Sunday, 12 April, Twitter user @anasuliana, or also referred to as Ana, wrote, "Coming home from buying groceries, took a little break, turned on some music, then sat alone in the kithcen washing raw chicken, fish, and packed vegetables. My kind of me time."
She also added that the whole process of organising her groceries took two to three hours but it's worth it. It makes the cooking process a lot easier and helps her save money as the items stay fresh for much longer.

Here are some of the tips she shared:
1. Split proteins into smaller portions and put them in separate ziplock bags

Ana shared that she places two to three pieces of chicken in one plastic bag, depending on the size. One whole chicken could be divided to around 13 smaller portions.
This trick helps chicken and other proteins last longer as you will only defrost ingredients that will be cooked immediately and not more than that.
2. Keep vegetables in ziplock bags or airtight containers lined with tissue paper

According to Ana, her vegetables could stay fresh for up to 10 days thanks to this trick.
She also added that this works best for chilli peppers.
3. Place leafy herbs in the freezer

Leafy herbs and vegetables such as curry leaves, coriander, parsley, and pandan will not go bad even after a month if you keep them in the freezer.
I personally freeze them myself, and I can safely say that they still taste great when added to cooking.
4. Keep vegetables such as carrots, lemongrass, and ginger in containers filled with water

Ana says that she keeps carrots, lemongrass, and galangal in containers filled with water in the fridge.
Make sure to change the water once a week.
5. Cover vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower with plastic wrap

Another Twitter user replied to Ana saying, "Tips to keep cabbage fresh even after a month. Every time after use, cover it up with clear plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge. Each time you cut it, it'll be so crisp as if you just got it from a farm."
