1-Year-Old Baby Among 102 Arrested By Immigration Officers In Langkawi

A one-year-old Thai citizen was among 102 illegal immigrants arrested by the Kedah Immigration Department over the last weekend

"The detainees, who are aged between one and 48, are made of 53 Myanmar nationals, 22 Bangladeshi nationals, 11 Indonesian nationals, two Pakistani nationals, one Indian national, and 11 Thai nationals including two children," Kedah Immigration Department director Zuhair Jamaludin was quoted as saying by Bernama earlier today, 8 July. 

The arrests were made during Op Bersepadu, a two-day operation carried out between Friday, 5 July to yesterday, 7 July.

Immigration officers had raided 90 locations in Langkawi over the weekend

According to Malaysiakini, the operation was headed by Enforcement Division chief S Ravathi, along with four senior officers and 13 personnel.

The raids were conducted in:

- Yacht clubs,
- Private marinas,
- Private island resorts,
- Areas around Pantai Chenang,
- Construction sites,
- Rental houses, and
- Business premises including grocery stores and restaurants.

As many as 1,000 people were inspected during Op Bersepadu.

The detainees have been reportedly placed in the Immigration Department's lock-up to facilitate investigations

"They were detained under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for abusing social visit passes to work, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act for failing to produce valid travel documents or passes, and Section 15(1)(c) for overstaying," Zuhair was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini. 

He added that the 102 people are to be transferred to the Sik Immigration Depot.

"The Immigration Department will intensify the operations to weed out illegal immigrants from working without any valid documents on the island," Zuhair said.
