New Straits Times reported that the landslide occurred at around 9.15pm last night at a hotel in Tanjung Bungah.

According to China Press, the hotel was identified as Lost Paradise Resort.

Here's what we know so far:

1. The victims were foreign workers hired by the owner of Lost Paradise Resort

Malay Mail reported that all four men, who were from Myanmar, were hired to build a 2.1-metre high retaining wall at the hotel.

The project was ordered by the resort owner after soil movement was noticed in the area over the past week.

Channel NewsAsia reported North East district police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Che Zaimani Che Awang as saying that the victims were given 20 days to finish the job.

2. However, the construction project did not receive approval from authorities

According to China Press, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) did not approve the project at Lost Paradise Resort.

The council revealed the information through a statement earlier today, 26 June.

3. The landslide happened when the men were digging a drain on the slope of the hotel

According to New Straits Times, the drain they were digging was 4.5 metres deep when the incident occurred.

The ground had caved in, and buried the men alive.

4. A 61-year-old gardener nearby the scene, who heard a loud noise, alerted the authorities about the landslide

Free Malaysia Today reported that the Fire and Rescue Department was immediately deployed to the scene for a search and rescue operation.

Excavators were also used in the search to find the victims.

Three of the men were discovered in standing position, reported Channel NewsAsia

The deadly incident came just over eight months after the Bukit Kukus landslide last year:
