A five-year-old girl died after she was left in her mother's car that was parked near the back entrance of Shah Alam Hospital on Tuesday, 30 January

According to the New Straits Times, Shah Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the police were informed of the incident by a medical officer at the hospital at 8pm the same day.

He said preliminary investigations found that the victim was left by her mother in the car by accident, after she was picked up from a nearby daycare centre at about 2pm.

"The victim was asleep in the car and the engine was turned off. The 34-year-old mother, who is also a hospital staff, only realised that she had left the child behind after her husband contacted her at 6pm.

"The unconscious victim was then taken to the hospital's Emergency Department and efforts to resuscitate her failed. She was confirmed dead by the medical officers there," Mohd Iqbal said in a statement today, 1 February.

The police chief said a post-mortem was conducted at 2pm yesterday, 31 January, with the results pending laboratory investigations

However, he said initial checks on the victim's body did not reveal any external or internal injuries.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act for negligence, reported The Star.

"We advise the public to be more careful after fetching their children from school or daycare centres to prevent accidentally leaving them in vehicles," added Mohd Iqbal.

He urged anyone with information on the case to contact investigating officer Insp Syer Aidid at +6013-6544996.
