The government has announced that a portion of civil servants' allowances will be cut for three months to help fund the country's battle against COVID-19

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali announced the allowance cuts in a statement this morning, 1 June.

"The contributions from over 800,000 civil servants, excluding frontliners or those in Grade 1 to Grade 28, is estimated to be over RM30 million," said Mohd Zuki.

All the funds will be donated to the National Disaster Relief Fund.

He said circular letters detailing the implementation will be issued in the nearest future

However, he has announced that the contributions will be made based on a civil servant's appointed grade.

The highest grade, JUSA A, will face a 50% deduction, 20% for JUSA B, 10% for JUSA C, and 5% for those Grade 44 to 56 from their fixed entertainment allowance (ITK).

Meanwhile, for those in Grades 29 to 41, a flat RM10 will be deducted from their fixed public service allowance (ITKA).

The Chief Secretary added that the contributions are a gesture of the civil service's solidarity with the Cabinet, who will be donating three months of their salaries

"We understand that civil servants are the backbone of the government in its efforts to balance between lives and livelihood," said Mohd Zuki.

"May this sacrifice become a cause for goodness in the lives of each and every civil servant and their families."

He called for the civil servants to continue their efforts and commitment in delivering the best service possible to the rakyat and the nation, as well as assist in assuring success together in overcoming this challenging time.
