A nurse has been found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six others at a UK hospital where she worked

The case has sent shockwaves through the UK and the world.

The trial, which lasted from October 2022 to August 2023, revealed chilling details of Lucy Letby's crimes and the extent of her disturbing actions as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester.

Letby attacked at least thirteen infants under her care, resulting in the deaths of seven of them. Her methods included injecting victims with air or insulin, overfeeding them, and physically assaulting them.

While Letby, who is now 33, committed the crimes between 2015 and 2016, she was only arrested in July 2018 after a painstaking investigation by Cheshire Police, amidst attempts by the hospital bosses to silence doctors and failure to investigate allegations against the former nurse, according to the BBC.

Following her initial release on bail, she was re-arrested in June 2019 and again in November 2020 when she was ultimately charged, as additional evidence came to light linking her to more infant deaths.

The trial revealed the chilling extent of the truly heinous acts committed by the woman, who was entrusted with the care of infants

The court heard testimonies from medical experts, colleagues, and families of the victims. The prosecution presented a disturbing picture of Letby's actions, detailing her calculated methods to harm and kill infants. She was found guilty of seven counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder this week.

However, the woman's refusal to attend her sentencing hearing prompted the mother of two of Letby's victims to issue a statement that said it was "just one final act of wickedness from a coward".

Other victims' families said they felt disrespected by her absence.

According to several handwritten Post-it notes found in Letby's handbag after her arrest, one of them stated that she "killed them on purpose" because she is "not good enough to care for them".

She wrote "I am evil, I did this" in capital letters on another note.

While Letby later denied that these were a confession, stating that the notes were merely a reflection of her mental turmoil that she had written while she was being investigated, reported The Guardian.

Letby, whose crimes have made her the UK's most prolific child serial killer in modern times, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole life order. She will now spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Meanwhile, after the trial, the mother of a pair of twins, referred to as Baby A and Baby B, delivered a poignant statement addressing the serial killer nurse, who attacked her children in June 2015.

"You thought it was your right to play God with our children's lives," the mother said.

The twins, both victims of Letby's gruesome actions, suffered devastating consequences: Baby A lost his life on 8 June 2015, while Letby attempted to kill his sister just 28 hours later, reported the BBC.

Describing the trauma, the mother expressed how their minds are forever scarred by the unimaginable events, saying, "Our minds are so traumatised it won't let us remember the night you killed our child."

Despite their pain, the family's fear for Baby B's safety served as a protective shield, the mother said.

"We are so thankful we had that fear for her, as it saved her life. There was always a member of our family at her side, watching. Little did we know you were waiting for us to leave so you could attack," she recounted.

"You thought you could enter our lives and turn it upside down but you will never win," she declared, adding, "We hope you live a very long life and spend every day suffering for what you've done."

Another mother described the ordeal as a "life sentence" for her surviving son. Her twin sons, Baby E and Baby F, were also subjected to Letby's actions.

Baby E was murdered on 4 August 2015, and just a day later, his brother faced a harrowing attempt on his life. He now suffers from complex needs from the attack, with the mother still frightened to leave him alone.

"Our worlds were shattered when we encountered evil disguised as a caring nurse," she said.
