GDP Per Capita In These 5 States Are Higher Than The National Average Of RM54,612
GDP per capita is a popular metric used to measure the average prosperity and wellbeing of a country.
The gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in five states exceeded the national average in 2023, according to data from the Department of Statistics of Malaysia (DOSM)
GDP per capita represents the average amount of money each person would have if the country's total economic output were evenly distributed among its population. It is a key indicator of average living standards and economic wellbeing.
Citing DOSM, the New Straits Times reported that the national GDP per capita was RM54,612 in 2023.
Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest GDP per capita at RM131,038, inclusive of the figures from Putrajaya.
Following Kuala Lumpur, Labuan had the second highest GDP per capita at RM83,596, followed by Penang at RM72,586, Sarawak at RM72,411, and Selangor at RM62,492.

Six states — Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sarawak, Penang, and Sabah — collectively contributed 73% to the national GDP
Selangor led with a GDP of RM406.1 billion, followed by Kuala Lumpur at RM249.3 billion, Johor at RM148.2 billion, Sarawak at RM142.4 billion, Penang at RM116 billion, and Sabah at RM83.2 billion, according to a DOSM Facebook post.
Selangor, Pahang, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur recorded higher growth rates than the national GDP.
